Before the installation of the clock, the time was told by the sundial over the south porch entrance. This is dated 1623 and carries a Latin inscription from Ovid's, Meta-morphosis, Lit IV-X, lines 224-6, slightly altered. It reads thus:

Ille ego sum, qui longum metior annum omnia qui video, per quem videt omnia tellus, mundi oculus
(I am he, who measures out the long year, who beholds all things and through who, the earth sees all things, the eye, in fact, of the universe.)

The sundial was supplemented with small mass clocks which were much simpler sundials indicating only the times of worship. These were carved on the south east face of the porch and are still discernible, though much eroded.
