At one
time the church of St Peter and St Paul had a tall steeple which,
along with the Bell Tower, collapsed and crashed into the body of
the church in March 1634. The church was not usable for several years,
until finally King Charles I made the diocese raise enough money to
undertake the expensive and extensive repair work. The church was
rebuilt in the next few years to its present form with a strong tower
flanked by massive buttresses and topped with eight weathervanes.
